- How do you create emotionally believable characters?
For me, emotionally believable characters begin with understanding what hurts them most.
Long before I start writing chapters, I spend time figuring out my characters’ fears, regrets, and the emotional wounds they carry into the story. Those hidden struggles shape the choices they make, the walls they build, and the way they respond to love and faith.
I also try to remember that real people are complicated. Even good people make mistakes when they’re afraid, grieving, or protecting their hearts. Those imperfect moments are often what make characters feel the most human.
The emotional details matter too. Sometimes it’s not a grand speech that makes a character believable. It’s the hesitation before answering a question, the way they avoid eye contact, or the tiny act of kindness they offer when nobody notices.
I want readers to see pieces of themselves inside the characters because those emotional connections are what stay with us long after the story ends.
- What’s your approach to building character conflict and tension?
Character conflict and tension usually grow naturally once I understand what each character wants and what stands in their way.
The strongest tension doesn’t come from villains or dramatic misunderstandings alone. It comes from emotional conflict. Two people may care deeply for each other while still carrying fears, past wounds, or responsibilities that pull them in opposite directions.
In "His Daughter’s Faithful Companion," both Ryan and Brooke want to protect the people they love, but their past experiences lead them to approach life very differently. Those differences create tension in quiet, emotional ways that slowly build throughout the story.
I also love layering internal and external conflict together. While the characters face challenges around them, they’re also battling doubts, guilt, and fear within themselves. That emotional push and pull keeps the relationship growing while making the eventual healing feel earned.
- How do you balance character flaws with reader sympathy?
One of the easiest ways to lose reader sympathy is to make a character seem perfect. Real people have flaws, and honestly, those flaws often make readers connect with them most.
The key is helping readers understand why the character struggles.
A stubborn character may actually be terrified of losing control. Someone who pushes others away might be protecting a wounded heart. Even when characters make mistakes, readers are more likely to stay emotionally invested if they can see the fear, pain, or longing underneath those choices.
I try to balance flaws with moments of vulnerability, kindness, humor, or quiet strength. Those small glimpses into a character’s heart remind readers there’s still goodness beneath the struggle.
For me, the goal isn’t to create perfect characters. It’s to create honest ones.
- What techniques do you use to give each character a distinct voice?
Every character has their own rhythm, personality, and emotional filter, so I try to approach dialogue almost like listening to different people speaking in a room.
Some characters are guarded and careful with their words. Others speak quickly, tease when they’re nervous, or ramble when emotions get too close to the surface. Their background, experiences, and personality all shape the way they communicate.
I also pay attention to what characters avoid saying. Sometimes silence reveals more than dialogue ever could.
In deeper emotional scenes, I rely heavily on body language, reactions, and internal emotion to help distinguish the voices even further. A tough cowboy and a cautious heroine may describe the exact same moment very differently because they’re experiencing it through completely different emotional lenses.
Distinct character voices help stories feel immersive because readers begin to recognize who’s speaking without needing dialogue tags every time.
"His Daughter’s Faithful Companion" is a heartwarming story about healing, trust, and the unexpected ways love finds us when we least expect it.
Widowed father Ryan Tanner is determined to keep his young daughter safe after losing his wife, especially with Ellie’s severe peanut allergy constantly hanging over their lives. Brooke Carter has her own scars and keeps emotional distance between herself and others, focusing instead on the dogs she trains and the quiet life she’s carefully built.
Then Max enters the picture.
As a specially trained dog with a troubled history, Max slowly becomes the bridge connecting this fragile little family. While Ryan and Brooke learn to trust each other, Ellie discovers courage, and Max proves that second chances aren’t just for people.
Filled with faith, emotional healing, family, and sweet romance, this story is ultimately about finding hope after heartbreak and learning that love often arrives in the most unexpected ways.
His Daughter's Faithful Companion
Begins with a special dog
Single dad Ryan Tanner is fiercely protective of his daughter. So when a dog at the local rescue farm saves Ellie from a life-threatening allergic reaction, Ryan is determined to adopt Max as an allergen detection dog. There’s only one problem: trainer Brooke Sanders. She thinks Max’s unpredictable behavior makes him unsafe to place with a child. Convincing Brooke to give Max a chance isn’t easy, but convincing her to give Ryan a chance might be even harder. As Ellie bonds with both Brooke and Max, Brooke can see what being part of this family might be like. But is she willing to take the risk?
